FAQ
I’m interested but feeling a little apprehensive.
Meeting someone new can feel uncertain for sure. Personally, I try to interpret the uncertainty I experience in a different perspective - That instead of fear, it could mean excitement and opportunity.
Sometimes we may feel that seeking help is no longer a priority, or we can wait it out a little longer. It might help to just give it a try and see if you can become a better version of yourself.
How should I choose a psychotherapist?
You should find someone you feel comfortable with, someone to help you gain insights. Research has consistently shown that therapeutic rapport, feeling “felt”, is the key determinant to therapy success. This matters more than the therapist’s training, the kind of psychotherapy they do, or what types of problem you have.
While it can be nice to find a counsellor who we think can relate to us, I hope that similarities are not the only marker of effectiveness of a therapist, because it is sometimes the differences that can help us gain new perspectives.
While it can also be nice to find a therapist with many certifications and experience, I hope that you stay mindful that your therapy journey, the experience you will gain, is equally (or more!) about the mindset you adopt and the work you put in.
In the end, I think it might be useful to liken it to choosing a gym trainer - Getting started with a person you feel comfortable with matters more than the exact trainer you choose.
You will know if your sessions are helpful in terms of emotional, behavioural or cognitive changes you experience.
What is the process if I am interested to find out more?
Reach out to me (through the contact form, email or phone) and we can arrange to have a 15-min consultation session in which I can understand your needs better and clarify any concerns you may have. This session allows us to gauge a little if we are good matches for one another. From there, you can decide if and how you would like to proceed with our first counselling session together.
On frequency - Most clients are comfortable meeting around once or twice a month, to give some time in between sessions for changes and life to happen. That said, sometimes people may benefit from more frequent sessions, if they are going through something intense, or one-off sessions, just to organize their thoughts or have their current experiences validated.
What form of psychotherapy do you offer?
My personal philosophy is narrative-driven but I am trained in several other modalities and can adjust to support your specific issues. In particular, I am trained in SFBT, CBT and CTRT and work in an integrative approach with techniques from narrative therapy and mindfulness practice.
The work I do is talk-based, although tools like art and games can come in useful for clients, especially younger ones, to express themselves.
Do you support clients with anxiety?
Yes of course! The majority of clients (or humans) faces anxiety. While coping with anxiety can be difficult in and of itself (as in anxiety attacks), anxiety is the most common symptom to deeper issues. Anxiety motivates us to work on the issues we are facing.
To effectively manage anxiety, we may explore 1) strategies to manage with anxiety and/or 2) managing the root issues causing anxiety. This means that while you might come into therapy solely to reduce anxiety, we might need to work on other areas for that to happen.
